Homemade guacamole recipe
Guacamole is one of Mexico’s most iconic dishes, loved the world over for its simple yet irresistible flavor combination. This creamy avocado dip has roots that go all the way back to the Aztecs, who created the first version called ahuacamolli, meaning “avocado sauce” in Nahuatl, the Aztec language.
The history of guacamole is deeply rooted in the culture and nature of Mexico. The avocado, the main ingredient, originated in Mesoamerica where it was cultivated for thousands of years for its nutritious properties. The Aztecs mixed avocado with salt and herbs to create a simple and nutritious sauce that has been refined and adapted over the centuries.
Today, guacamole is not only a staple of Mexican cuisine, but also a global favorite, served as a dip, filling in tacos, or topping on salads. Its freshness and slight tartness from the lime juice perfectly balance the creamy avocado and spicy notes from the chili and cilantro.
Authentic homemade guacamole recipe
With our guacamole recipe, you can make authentic guacamole at home and enjoy the taste of a classic Mexican dip with deep roots in Aztec cuisine.
What you need for your guacamole recipe:
Guacamole recipe:
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1-2 small tomatoes, finely chopped (without seeds for a firmer consistency)
- 1 small salad onion, finely chopped
- Dehydrated serrano chili (soak in warm water for 30 minutes)
- 1-2 teaspoons lime juice
- 2-3 tablespoons coriander, finely chopped
- Salt
How to make homemade guacamole:
Prepare the avocados:
- Cut the avocados in half lengthwise, remove the pits (save them for later), and scoop the soft flesh into a bowl with a spoon.
- Roughly mash the avocados with a fork in a bowl. It is important that the mash still has some texture and is not completely pureed.
Add flavorings:
- Stir the finely chopped tomatoes, onion, coriander, and garlic (if using) into the avocado mash.
Season to taste:
- Season with sea salt. Adjust the flavor to your preference.
- Squeeze the juice of the lime over the guacamole and mix well. The lime not only adds freshness but also prevents the avocado from turning brown. If you add the avocado pit, it will also help prevent your homemade guacamole from turning brown.
Serving:
- Serve the guacamole immediately with crispy tortilla chips, as a filling in tacos or as a topping for a Mexican salad.
Storage:
- If storing, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to minimize oxygenation and store in the fridge. Eat within one day.
