Description

The Serrano chili pepper is a bit like the well-known jalapeño pepper, similar in color but smaller, around 2.5 to 10 cm long on average and just over 1 cm wide.

They are meaty peppers and are not the best choice for drying, although it can be done. Serrano chiles originate from the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo. The name of the pepper, serrano, is actually a reference to the mountains (sierras) in these areas.

Serrano chilies are commonly red, brown, orange or yellow, although you will also find them in their more common green color, like a jalapeño pepper.

The Serrano chili pepper has an even better bite than jalapeños and offers a fresh taste similar to the jalapeño.

Roasted Serrano chili is a favorite snack in Mexico and can be added to many different meals.

How does Serrano chili taste?

Most people have tasted a jalapeño at one point or another, and if you have, you know roughly what to expect in flavor from a Serrano chili. Biting into a Serrano chili pepper will give you a hotter, spicier rush than a jalapeño, but again, very similar.

The history of Serrano chili

Serrano chili has a long and traditional history in Mexican cooking. It is one of the most common chilies in this area of the world and is very flavorful. Because of this, Serrano chili is often included in many of Mexico’s specialties.

Serrano chili peppers get their name due to the fact that the area in Mexico where they mainly come from – the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo – is incredibly mountainous. The word “sierra” means mountain in Spanish.

Each plant can produce fifty or more pods. When immature, they are green, but mature Serrano peppers can appear in many different colors, from green to red to brown, orange or yellow.

How hot is Serrano chili?

Serrano chilies range from between 10,000 – 23,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units), which is a good heat level for general cooking.

However, this can be considered spicy and hot for some who are not used to eating spicy or spicy food.
